What is a manuscript critique?

A manuscript critique by me incorporates holistic feedback on your work (story structure, pacing, character development, world-building, etc.) as well as reactionary comments à la a beta reader and some comments/suggested edits aimed to strengthen your writing style (line edits). I will also make copy edits (grammar and punctuation) as long as I feel it does not slow me down.

What genres do you critique? Is there anything you won’t critique?

My forte is adult science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction, and realistic fiction. I have written, read, and formally studied these genres. If, however, you are still interested in working with me for a different genre, feel free to reach out to me to discuss your work as long as it is not erotica. I would not be the best choice for an erotica writer because I’m a celibate asexual and the content goes over my head. I can, however, handle spice in a manuscript; I only decline to work with manuscripts that would be marketed as erotica.

What draft should I be on before reaching out to you?

I do not recommend sending me your first draft. Whatever draft you do send me does not need to be perfect or beautiful, but I do ask that it be readable. By this I mean that a person other than yourself is able to read it and comprehend it on their own. If it is hard for me to read your work, it will be hard for me to critique it, and because I believe that would not be a good use of my time or your money, I will be forced to decline the project.

If you need help brainstorming on an early draft, I am available for hire by the hour in tutoring sessions; please see my tutoring page for more details.

Can I have just a portion of my manuscript critiqued?

Absolutely! Whether it’s just the first ten pages, or a section you’re struggling with, or what have you, I’m here to help.

What is your editing credo?

I really believe in doing what’s best for the story and the writer’s intentions with it. This is your book! I’m not here to disregard your vision for the sake of the market or my own personal tastes; I’m here to make it the best version of what you want it to be. To this end, all suggestions are obviously only ever suggestions, and I give every client the option to submit an Artist’s Statement along with their manuscript, which I will read after the manuscript but before writing my reader’s report.

That being said, if you have come to me, it should be with some understanding of how I view literature and what I think makes a good book. My TikTok (also available on my YouTube) is a great resource for learning about my perspective. In general, however, I prefer character-driven to plot-driven stories, I love theme, I talk a lot about structure (but not three-act or five-act or Save the Cat), and I value language (i.e., the sound of your writing).

Testimonials

Taylor Murch has been an instrumental part of my manuscript development. Her ability to see beyond the surface and understand the nuance within dialogue and scene setting make her commentary so effective and easy to implement.

Not only is Taylor able to protect my authorial voice through specific and direct feedback on exactly what I am struggling with, she respects the vision of my story as a whole. I have loved working with her and am looking forward to working with her in the future!

Taylor Murch is a guiding force that has helped me navigate the editing process of my two manuscripts. From the big plot points to the backstories of characters, Taylor delves into every aspect with such enthusiasm and expertise. During our sessions, she asks questions that help me brainstorm ideas and, thus, breathe life into my characters’ arcs and world’s structure.

I started writing my stories without knowing anything about the publishing industry. So I was very lucky to discover Taylor’s editing and critique services. Her insight as a creative writing graduate is invaluable, and her honest critiques have not only helped me grow as a writer—they’ve helped my characters and worldbuilding blossom!
